Generosity, or self-interest?

THE DEPARTURES PROJECT

I need help. Since childhood I’ve been collecting ‘interesting things’. Nothing wrong with that, until in later life you find you’ve accrued thousands of found objects. Possessions that do the possessing: requiring more space and lifetime than I have at my disposal.

The Departures Project bids a painful farewell to 90% of this found object archive. It puts these objects into the creative hands of other people, whether or not they would call themselves artists.

HOW IT WORKS

Group work using objects from the archive

Group work using objects from the archive

The archive is divided into caches of related objects. Participants take a cache (or an individual object) and do something inventive with it*. They commit to send visual/verbal feedback to this site. Videos and extra images can be posted to our Flickr group

Participants hand the cache (or single object) onto someone else willing to make the same commitment (failing this, they pass it on to a charity, recycling

centre or other project) Theoretically, the project is both perpetual and geographically infinite. Every object will be tagged with a numbered label that links it to the eatio.org website.

*Using the cache, or object, either as inspiration or working materials. The ‘something inventive’ might be writing, video, music, visual arts, sound, performance, installation, journey, anything!

  1. I was given 5 objects to take to Aberdeen. I went onto beach and found a spot where people passed by. There was some interest as one couple sat down but people seemed a bit hesitant. However I asked one passerby, one possible use for the objects given to me they suggested that the plastic pink shaped heart(item no.7) could be used as a soap not very romantic but there you go!
The afternoon whilst thinking about what to do with items I had been given to distribute (taken to Aberdeen and returned no takers there),I had a flash of inspiration for one of the items.
I put Item no. 6 on my forehead with the lid open and then got a coin threw it up and caught it in the tin. So far I have done this 7-8 times will keep practising until proficient and use this trick/stunt for when I do street performances or childrens parties.
Will keep you posted on my progress and hopefully send a future picture on me catching the coin in the tin.

  2. Your blog is interesting!

    Keep up the good work!

  3. What a great idea, will definetly be getting involved once back in the uk, if not before.
